Body waxing can be painful, and it can be next to impossible to find the right esthetician for the job. If you have already found that perfect place, then this article is not for you, but if not, the questions and concepts below will help you understand better what to look for in a waxing spa and help you find the perfect experience with the least amount of pain.
What services do you offer? Having a license to do waxing does not make waxing good. And we find there are some trends in quality of waxing in different types of spas. Places specializing in hair styling, or nails, tend to be below average in waxing quality even when the quality of other services is good. Places with a specialty in skin care will probably be as good as their skin care (for good or bad), and those specializing in waxing should be good.
What wax does your spa use? There are two basic types of wax: Cold and Hot. “Cold” wax is most commonly known as “hard”, or “stripless” wax, and “hot” is a traditional sticky, liquid that uses strips. Cold wax is by far a neater and more pleasant experience. If the answer is either “cold” or “hard” wax, consider the place an option. If they say they use strips, beware, only a few cold waxes use strips, but all hot waxes use them.
What process do you follow? Cornstarch or talcum powder – OK, it is actually a common step for many of the better waxers to reduce moisture and provide a better grip. Disinfectant in preparation, beware the type. Alcohol, quaternary, or bleach based are bad. These are not friendly to your skin and can even make the experience more painful than it has to be by tightening up your pores. Post epilatory oil – Is a good step used in higher-level waxing. Anti-ingrown hair treatment – Good step, very high level. Additional steps will usually mean the wax center has taken the time to look into creating a better waxing experience. Having a very simple process, or not having a process at all implies the service will not be good.
What do you do for the waxing to not hurt? The question really has no right answer. Angle, speed, pressure, temperature, numbing cream, experience, etc. all speak to a higher-level service. Vague or broad answers, or not knowing is a sign of a low service level. The important thing is not the actual answer. You want to sense if they feel confident in their services. Confidence is always a good indicator of quality.
Aside from these questions, you can qualify a place based on the attitude of the person on the phone. A place with a culture that is considerate to you as a client will show it through the attention and client focus of the receptionist. If the receptionist seems to not care, the waxing will probably hurt more. That simple. You can also visit the website of the waxing centers you are considering, and seek the professionalism and thoroughness of information, which will give you an idea of how they went about their wax program development. If their website gives you ideas to have a more comfortable experience, then your comfort will probably be important during the service as well. In a similar way, having a poor quality website means the quality of their waxing service will probably be down to par, and having no website probably means “old-school” in their wax too – NOT GOOD!
To reduce the pain of the experience, you can also take two ibuprofen or acetaminophen pills 30 minutes prior to your service (not aspirin), and avoid caffeine, other stimulants, and foods that may make you retain water in your tissues the day prior to your service. Some people may caution you regarding the recycling of wax, but in our opinion it is more of an urban legend; we find it hard to believe that people would actually do it in a professional business. Regardless, it is always best to only visit and use services of a reputable place that you trust. Very importantly, if you walk into a wax facility and find it dirty, say “I just came by to look into the place”, and walk right back out. Unhygienic waxing is dangerous, and it is not worth it to risk your health.
