Childhood Diabetes Symptoms: Know the Signs

Knowing childhood diabetes symptoms early on can help save a life. When you feel that something out of the ordinary is taking place, take heed. This is especially true if the child is so young that he still can’t talk or he is unable to express how he feels.

As we already know, carbohydrates are being broken down into glucose or sugar and are being absorbed by the blood. Once our body requires energy through different activities, blood glucose goes inside cells to become energy. Insulin from the pancreas is needed in this process without which the activity will not be complete. How do we know if something is wrong?

Childhood diabetes symptoms include:

FREQUENT URINATION. This is the most evident early warning sign of diabetes. It happens because there is excess glucose in the bloodstream which needs to be excreted. Consider frequent bed wetting in your child. Although we must know that indeed babies and toddlers do wet our beds, unusual frequent occurrence must be noted.
TOO MUCH THIRST. It is because of frequent urination that children with early warning signs of diabetes experience too much thirst. Body fluids and water passes and get lost in frequent urination. Since the body’s water content is affected, a child must have a generous intake of water. In the same way, the electrolytes needed by the body go with the urine also. As such, children with diabetes longs for drinks or water in frequent intervals.

TOO MUCH APPETITE. Do you notice a child getting hunger pangs every so often? Watch out for this sign too. Common childhood diabetes symptoms include excessive craving for food. There is a decreased supply of the needed energy which stimulates the urgency to eat. Blood sugar is not being utilized and changed into energy.

LETHARGY. Too much fatigue and weakness are also considered to be early signs of diabetes. While blood glucose is present in the body, it is not being used up properly for one reason or another because the body fails to function normally.

WOUNDS THAT DO NOT HEAL FAST. Too much sugar in the bloodstream affects the capillaries. It is because of stored fats that blood flow decreases significantly. When blood does not circulate properly, wounds and sores have difficulty healing. Harmful bacteria begin to spread.

IMPAIRED SENSE OF SIGHT. When a child complains of blurry vision, consult your health expert. He may be at risk for diabetes. Prevent further complications from happening with early detection.
WEIGHT LOSS. Children that are diabetic experience sudden loss of weight. Sometimes it couldn’t be explained.
Do not ignore these childhood diabetes symptoms. The child must be brought to the doctor at once. Aside from the complete family history, your doctor will require the child to undergo thorough physical examination and a series of vital laboratory tests. Early detection will help one manage diabetes better. There is nothing more precious than excellent health and wellness.
