Is Your Existing Bed The Reason You Don’t Get A Good Night’s Sleep?

Posted by Tonny Randell On February - 1 - 2010

During your existence you will spend about a third of your life in your mattress. In addition to acting as your accessory throughout this large portion of your life, your mattress has a very big influence on the rest of your day. Getting through the day after a inadequate night’s sleep is not usually much fun. Nor is waking up aching or with back pain.

Yet for people who suffer these problems, it’s often their bed and specifically their mattress which is the cause. Mattresses have a distinct lifespan, after which they simply no longer provide the support you require, with potentially disastrous consequences for your well being. If you aren’t having sufficient sleep it can create dramatic effects on your health. A long term lack of sleep can cause:

- high blood pressure
- mental health issues
- heart problems
- memory loss
- dramatic weight gain

and an inadequate mattress can cause or make worse painful back and other muscle and joint problems.

So how do you know if your mattress is not doing its job properly – preferably before it starts causing problems? Let’s commence with some easy to spot pointers to a mattress which needs to be consigned to the bin. Firstly, does the mattress sag visibly even without a person on it? A good mattress should not. When you do lie on it, are you already aware of lying in a dip (not just the normal give from accommodating your weight)? Either of these means that the mattress should to be replaced. If the mattress is older than ten years then it has got to the end of its working life (unless the manufacturer specified a longer lifespan). Other symptoms which may demonstrate you have a poor mattress include noticing that you sleep better in other beds or waking up with stiffness every morning.

Now there is some good news if your mattress does need to be replaced. Mattress technology has advanced dramatically over the last decade. So though the need to spend some cash on a new mattress may not be welcome, you’ll be glad you did once you get your new bed. When you look at new mattresses, pay particular attention to the relatively new memory foam technology. The rise of these mattresses has been unstoppable in the last few years and for good reason. Memory foam is probably the most comfortable mattress technology available. Also think about whether you want to take the opportunity to upgrade your bed size. So called standard size is really quite small and even a queen is in the modest side nowadays. Why not give yourself lots of room and check out king mattresses?
