According to the latest data released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), diabetes now affects 285 million people around the world. The cost that world have to spend is about USD $ 376 billion in 2010, or 11.6% of total world health spending. And it also reported that 344 million people are having a risk of diabetes (pre-diabetes). If there is no action that can be done to reverse the diabetes epidemic, the IDF predicts that by 2030, 435 million people will live with diabetes and world has to spend a cost projected exceeding USD $ 490 billion.

Usually diabetes organizations celebrate World Diabetes Day with blue lights activities, hiking, diabetes gymnastics, free blood sugar checks and other activity related to diabetes.

Analog insulin

Many studies have shown that the body will not be able to hold the damage of beta cells so the pancreas functions to produce insulin decline. Therefore, diabetes patient will eventually fail with anti diabetic therapy so in the end patients with diabetes will need insulin therapy.

Based from the fact, pharmaceutical technology starts to create the latest insulin treatment innovations. The use of insulin was started since 1922, which originated from animal insulin. Around the 1980s began in the use of human insulin, and in early 1990 expert found an insulin analogue as the latest generation of insulin with a working profile like natural insulin.

There are 3 types of insulin analogue which is divided by duration of action :
1. Insulin analog that work very fast (NovoRapid) – injected before the main meal and useful to lowering the blood sugar after a meal level (prandial glucose).
2. Mixed / premixed Insulin analog (NovoMix) – injected once a day before bedtime and serves to reduce fasting blood sugar (fasting glucose)
3. Long working analog insulin (Levemir). – injected 1-3 times a day just before the main meal, as needed and useful to lowering fasting blood sugar level and blood sugar level after meal
